Writer: Mark Gatiss
Director: Nicholas Briggs
Producers: Jason Haigh-Ellery, Gary Russell
Running Time: 1 hour, 29 minutes
Companion: Vislor Turlough (Mark Strickson)
Summary: The Fifth Doctor takes Turlough to London in 1702, in the hopes of teaching him to play Cricket. While there, they investigate disappearances of patrons losing card games at the Diabola Club, run by Sir Nicholas Valentine.
Review: This was the first Peter Davison story for Big Finish and a much better debut story than Sirens of Time. The story has a great spooky air to it and Nicholas Valentine is a great villain. It did feel kind of odd to have just Turlough and the Doctor (so I’m guessing this places the story between “Revolution of the Daleks” and “Planet of Fire”), but with no Tegan, I actually didn’t mind. The music is well orchestrated.
Overall Rating: 8/10
Trivia: This story is the basis for the Ninth Doctor episode “The Unquiet Dead”.
