Fifth Doctor Audio: Winter For the Adept

Writer: Andrew Cartmel
Director: Gary Russell
Producers: Gary Russell and Jason Haigh-Ellery

Running Time: 1 hour, 34 minutes

Companion: Nyssa (Sarah Sutton)

Summary: The Doctor and Nyssa arrive at a girl’s finishing school in the Swiss Alps in 1963. They discover that it has been haunted by a poltergeist.

Review: At first this may not seem like a standard Doctor Who story. It almost seems Jane Austen-like until the ghosts arrive. (But is there such a thing as a standard Doctor Who story? The show was originally designed to allow for all kinds of stories)

One thing that Doctor Who does well is the realm of paranormal and horror sci-fi. Many of the best stories are often the most frightening. The atmosphere for this in particular is well-kept by the music and sound.

Nyssa seems out of character as she seems more like the easily annoyed Tegan. The supporting cast isn’t too bad, especially Peril.

This is actually a pretty good early story from Big Finish. It’s worth a listen, even if Cartmel isn’t in his usual element.

Overall Review: 8/10

Continuity: Nyssa mentions her visit to Alaska in Land of the Dead and meeting the Xeraphin in the TV episode “Time-Flight”.

Trivia: India Fisher has her first role with Big Finish as Peril Bellamy. She would go on to play 8th and 6th Doctor companion Charlotte “Charley” Pollard. Andrew Cartmel was the script editor for most of the Sylvester McCoy Era.
