Tenth Doctor: The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit (dual review)

oodWriter: Matt Jones

Director: James Strong

Producer: Phil Collinson

Series: 2, episodes 8 & 9

Companion: Rose Tyler (Billie Piper)

Summary: The Doctor and Rose arrive on a mining base orbiting a black hole, where aliens known as the Ood do menial labor. The Ood are a slave race whose brains are partially removed in order to make them more subservient. Within the black hole, a demonic being known as The Beast is causing havoc and has possessed one of the workers. He has also entered the Ood’s hive mind, slowly turning them against the humans.

Review: For me this is one of the many gems of the Tennant Era.  Doctor Who’s speciality since its beginning was the “bottle episode”, an episode that is kept to one location, often preventing the heroes from escaping until the story is done, and this is an example of how well the show does them.  The Ood are both frightening and sympathetic, and an enjoyable addition to the mythos. I also like that the Beast is the devil himself. That’s the best feature of the story.

Overall Review: 10/10

Continuity: The sentry base is affiliated with the Torchwood Archive, continuing of repeating the word “Torchwood” for the season’s arc. The Ood’s planet is later introduced in “Planet of the Ood.”
