Twelfth Doctor: Last Christmas

Writer: Steven Moffat

Director: Paul Williamhurst

Producer: Paul Frift

Running Time: 1 hour, 30 minutes

Series: 8, Christmas Special

Companion: Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman)

Summary: The Doctor and Clara arrive at an Arctic base being attacked by creatures called Dream Crabs. They are helped by Santa Claus (no, really) and his elves (again, really). The creatures trap people in their dreams, where they die as they relive their memories of Christmas.

Review: This was a story that I thought I was actually not going to like. I was thinking “Santa Claus, really?” when I read the premise. I decided to just try to be as open-minded as I could, and was surprised at how much I enjoyed it.  The Dream Crabs were terrifying! The story really felt like a Doctor Who version of Inception, which I actually enjoy. Overall, this was one of the best Christmas specials.

Overall Review: 8/10

Continuity: The Doctor helps Clara open a Christmas cracker, reversing a scene in “Time of the Doctor”. Dreams involving time travel occurred in “Forest of the Dead” and “Name of the Doctor”. The Doctor referred to himself as a magician in “Time Heist.”

Trivia: Jenna was considering leaving after this episode, but changed her mind.
