Writer: Jonathan Morris
Director: Gary Russell
Producers: Gary Russell & Jason Haigh-Ellery
Executive Producer: Jacqueline Rayner
Running Time: 1 hour, 50 minutes
Companion: Evelyn Smythe
Summary: The Doctor and Evelyn Smythe travel to the Galapagos Islands and meet Charles Darwin aboard the Beagle. They also discover the Silurians have a civilization under the islands.
Review: Once again, Smythe is a delight in this story. Her gushing over Darwin is amusing. Her sense of humor provides great banter between her and the Doctor.
The Silurians are great in this story. This was before they returned in New Who, so they’re more like the ones the Third Doctor faced. The Myrka returns as well, and it actually seems more menacing than they tried to make it in “Warriors of the Deep” (especially since here you can imagine what it looks like instead of having to see the awful version we had on TV.)
Miles Richardson is great as Darwin. He plays the scientist well, displaying his enthusiasm and the conflicts his discoveries caused with his own beliefs.
Overall Review: 9/10
Continuity: The Third Doctor’s story “The Silurians” introduced the race. In “Warriors of the Deep”, we were introduced to the Myrka. In the audio drama Death in the Family, Smythe reminisces about meeting Darwin. The Eighth Doctor references this story in The Creed of the Kromon.
Trivia: This is the only audio drama by Big Finish so far to feature the Silurians.
