Summary: The Nightmare Scenario has occurred. The Zygons have learned that Osgood, one of the humans who negotiated with the Zygons in “Day of the Doctor”, has died. This has caused Zygons to fear their lives are being threatened. Zygon terrorists are wreaking havoc. Can the Doctor and Clara stop the Nightmare Scenario, when they aren’t even sure who is friend or foe?
Review: One of my minor problems with “Day of the Doctor” was that the Zygons’s subplot was so hastily resolved. I was glad to see this episode deal with that loose thread. The Zygons are one of my favorite races, so I love seeing them show up. This episode has been shot down for its commentary on xenophobia, especially in light of terrorist attacks, but I feel it is a necessary discussion.
Continuity: The Zygon treaty was established in “Day of the Doctor”. Kate Stewart mentions the first Zygon invasion in “Terror of the Zygons”. In this episode, Osgood now wears question-mark lapels, which she reminds the Doctor he wore. This was in all three of his regenerations from the 80’s. Dr. Harry Sullivan, a companion of the Fourth Doctor, invented the Z-67, a weapon for use against the Zygons. Lucie Miller is another companion who was copied by a Zygon (“The Zygon Who Fell to Earth”) The Doctor became President of Earth in “Death in Heaven”.
